More He’Brew

He’Brew marketing is back in Tampa this week for free beer tastings!

Yesterday, Oy Velo met up with He’Brew mishpocha Angela Prosper at King Corona Cigars in Ybor City. Angela is to King Corona as Diane is to Cheers. She actually worked at King Corona prior to taking her position as He’Brew’s first employee. As a result, Angela was as big a draw as the free beer.

At this tasting, I had the pleasure of reacquainting myself with Coney Island Lager, and tasting Albino Python. Both delicious. Granted, these beers are not technically He’Brews. However, they’re from the same brewery, and, as I mentioned earlier, they were free samples.

During this meeting, I confided to Angela that I’ve been sampling He’Brew lately and that while I thoroughly enjoy Genesis Ale and Messiah Bold, I (gasp) was not a fan of Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A. and thought I may have purchased a bad bottle. Angela assured me that the problem was not the beer, but my rudimentary palate. The Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A. is “brewed with an obscene amount of malts and hops” and is intentionally (go figure) bittersweet. The Lenny Bruce brew is actually one of He’Brew’s best sellers, one of the best I.P.A. beers on the market, and rated “fuck*#@ delicious” by Playboy. Fortunately, I have three large bottles of Bittersweet Lenny’s, and I intend to acquire a taste for it.

Stay tuned for more on He’Brew’s whirlwind Tampa beer tour.

Oy Velo and Hazon Team Up

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

If you google “Jewish Cycling,” the first hit you get is Hazon and the second is Oy Velo. Oy Velo has put aside its resentment of this fact and is working with Hazon to organize an Oy Velo bike team for the August bike ride in New York and the November ride in Israel.

The bad news: you can’t just go, you have to raise money; a shit load in fact.

The goood news: the money goes to charity, so it’s a great tax deductible bike trip. Additionally, Oy Velo will knock $100 off the cost of a frame and fork if you go on either ride. As if that’s not enough, you can see nipples on the ride (it’s under the hair).

With 12 men’s races and 16 women’s events on the 2008 NRC now complete, Australian Rory Sutherland (Health Net Maxxis) continues to hold a commanding lead in the overall individual standings on the men’s side while Canadian Leah Goldstein (Valueact Capitol) is the current women’s leader.

Women’s Individual Standings

2 Felicia Gomez (Can) Aaron’s 576
3 Tina Pic (USA) Colavita-Sutter Home 568
4 Mara Abbott (USA) High Road 555
5 Julie Beveridge (Can) Aaron’s 547

Leah Goldstein should be working to defend her Israeli National Jerseys shortly. I’ll keep you posted.

How to Raise a Jewish Dog

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

A fan (my Aunt Hillary) of Oy Velo sent me a copy of the book How to Raise a Jewish Dog by Ellis Weiner & Barbara Davilman. I’m not sure if Aunt Hillary was being sweet, or if she sent the book to me because my mom told her of the numerous ordinance citations against my dog. Either way, the book seems like a must read. Here are some sample training techniques:

On commanding “Sit!”: (”What, would it kill you to sit down for one lousy second?”)

Advanced command: (”Don’t stare at Cousin Edith’s hair when she comes over.”)

Situational Martyrdom when the dog disobeys: (”Fine. Do what you want. I hope you have a nice life.”)

I’m currently trying to stalk the authors and get an interview, so stay tuned.
